The problem

Fraudulent and altered Certificates of Insurance remain an ongoing concern in the for-hire transportation industry. These documents may use a legitimate insurance agency’s name and an actual policy number while misrepresenting the insured, covered vehicle, coverage limits, or policy dates.

Why this is a problem

Accepting an unverified document can leave drivers, bases, and transportation companies exposed to uninsured losses. FHTIA encourages bases and transportation platforms to verify insurance directly with the issuing agency using independently confirmed contact information. Verification should establish that the certificate is authentic, the specific vehicle is covered, and the policy meets applicable insurance requirements.

Proposed solution

FHTIA is working with insurance carriers to develop a more reliable method of direct coverage verification, helping bases and transportation platforms confirm coverage at its source and reduce opportunities for fraud. A Certificate of Insurance does not create or expand coverage. Verification is essential.
